Traverse City is the tourist capital and administrative centre of the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. There are a number of smaller ski resorts within easy reach of the city, as well as two of the larger ski areas in Michigan within a radius of 40 miles.

Hickory Hills Ski Area
Hickory Hills is a small ski area for Traverse City locals, located in the Slabtown area in the western part of the city. The skiing offers a 240 feet vertical and the 13 ski runs are served by five rope tows. Skiing is open late afternoon and early evening on weekdays and all day on the weekends.

Mt. Holiday Ski Resort
Mt. Holiday is a community-run ski area located just to the east of Traverse City. The small city ski operation has been on the go since 1949 and offers two lifts and a terrain park serving a mix of mainly easy runs. Skiing on the 200 foot vertical is open Tuesday to Friday in the evening and all day on the weekends.

Bay Mountain at Homestead Resort
The skiing at Homestead Resort on the shores of Lake Michigan is some of the most spectacular in the state. Located near Glen Arbor, the slopes above the Mountain Village base area offer stunning views of Sleeping Bear Bay. The ski area itself is quite small, with a vertical of around 200 feet and four kilometres of slopes.

Crystal Mountain Ski Resort
Crystal Mountain is a ski area just outside the town of Thompsonville around 45 minutes’ drive south-west of Traverse City. Those who are not basing themselves in Traverse City can find extensive resort accommodation at the ski area base. The area includes six chairlifts and two surface lifts serving 45 ski runs.

Shanty Creek Resort
The Shanty Creek ski area is located near the small town of Bellaire to the north-east of Traverse City. Shanty Creek is split over two mountains and the Schuss Mountain ski area is one of the larger Michigan ski resorts. It offers more than 40 ski slopes served by eight ski lifts and plenty of other winter sports options.
