Ski resorts near Idaho Falls

Residents and visitors to Idaho Falls may not have the options of the larger ski resorts which draw visitors elsewhere in the state.

In fact, three out of the five closest ski areas involve a trip east over the border into Wyoming. But the ski resorts closest to Idaho Falls all have their own individual quirks which almost guarantee that a visitor will find one that suits their needs….

Kelly Canyon ski resort is located just outside the town of Ririe. It dates back to the 1950s and has a traditional family-friendly vibe to it.
Kelly Canyon offers four chairlifts and a drag lift which cover a vertical of 1000 feet The large majority of the more than 50 ski runs are classed as easy or intermediate level.

Pebble Creek Ski Area

Pebble Creek ski area is located to the south of Idaho Falls just outside Pocatello. It is another smaller winter destination, but here more than half the runs are rated advanced or expert level on a vertical drop of 2200 feet.
Pebble Creek offers three lifts which serve a total of 54 runs and skiable terrain of 1100 acres.

Grand Targhee resort is almost treated as an honorary Idaho ski resort, as the Wyoming ski area can only be reached by driving into Idaho. The area is renowned for powder snow, with an annual average of 500 inches and cat-skiing available.
The terrain suits all standards, with options for beginners through to advanced skiers on the lift-served slopes.

Snow King Mountain

Known as ‘the town hill’, Snow King Mountain is on the outskirts of the town of Jackson in Wyoming. It was the first ski area in the state and has 400 acres of terrain with a vertical of 1571 feet.
There are three chairlifts and a couple of magic carpets accessing a total of 32 ski runs.

Jackson Hole Ski Resort

One of North America’s most renowned ski resorts is within easy reach of Idaho Falls. Jackson Hole, with its legendary couloirs and other challenging terrain, lies 20 minutes drive north of Jackson.
The extensive ski area is served by 13 lifts and, despite the expert reputation of the resort, has a good mix of ability levels.
